my new life

Working so hard every night and day
And now we get the pay back
Trying so hard saving up the paper
Now we get to lay back
~The glamorous Gwen Stefani- but of course.

It's official- pigs have officially jumped off the roof and are currently propelling their little curly pink tails around, flying in the sky.

In other words, my life has actually become EXCITING, which I pretty much thought would never happen. Now it's not that I haven't ever been on any thrilling adventures or had dramatic love affairs, but it's that my everyday life suddenly actually has some sparkle. I suppose the reason why is, for the past I don't know- 8 years- I've always felt the need to be so serious: studying all night for AP tests, mustering up the creativity to write the "perfect" essay, winning awards, and keeping my stupid 4.0 up throughout college (which let me tell you, was a serious pain looking back on it). And not only that, with all my family drama I suppose I've always had to play the role of the super-responsible adult, meaning that I would pretty much always have to act about 10 years older than I actually was. I hardly EVER partied in college, and sadly, never did in high school, so basically constantly felt so damn solitary and bored.

But it seems that my life has suddenly taken a turn for the better. For the first time i my life, I actually feel like a 20-something who can be erratic and carefree. Not to mention it is SOOOO wonderful not feeling guilty for not pulling an all-nighter or spending all my time in the library after class. When I come home from work I can basically do whatever I want- well, given that I don't stay up so late that I can't wake up at 6:15!! And even though it sucks being poor and getting paid an insultingly low salary, this whole dating thing sure does save a lot of money what with paid-for drinks, dinners, and cover charges. (Wow, now I officially sound like a gold-digger).

On that note, it is quite a bit humbling joining the clan of serfs aka recent college grads who have to take on demeaning jobs that pay virtually nothing. It's funny how all those nights of studying until you literally have to pry your eyes open basically lead you to a position where all you're doing is making copies and essentially being your boss's personal bitch. But alas, such is the life of entry-level work. I just have to remind myself that this job is only temporary and that from here on out I will at least have some type of job now that I'm under a temp agency who is kinda obligated to find me a job when I'm unemployed. I'd really like to land a position at somewhere like Brookings or Middle East Institute where I might actually get treated like a human being and not like a diminutive hamster on a rusty wheel.

Now the one disadvantage to all this insanity is that my circadian rhythms have gone completely haywire. I think my body is starting to hate me. When you're staying out till midnight on a "school night" and waking up at the crack of dawn and dancing till 4 AM only to wake up around 2, you find yourself unable to distinguish between night and day. Ah well, it's worth it. Who needs a schedule when you can just let life take you wherever it wills?
